During its early career as a leader in the video game industry, Atari brought about a profound change in a very young and developing sector. Atari's VCS/2600 system was not only the first gaming device to truly dominate living rooms, but also the Setting for some of the most iconic titles of all time, including Asteroids, Space Invaders, Pac-Man Defender, Joust, Pitfall, River Raid and many, many more.
In its heyday, the Atari name became synonymous with video games, just as the Nintendo name would a few years later, but the company - and the industry - fell just as quickly thanks to the infamous North American video game crash of 1983. Despite this catastrophic event, Atari persisted, and the following year released the powerful 7800 console - a device that could easily have restored the company to its former glory had its 1984 launch gone as planned.
This book describes the highs and lows of a truly turbulent period in the history of video games, an era that laid the foundation for what has now become one of the world's most popular forms of entertainment.
