As the UK computer games scene began to explode, a small shop popped up on Carver Street in Sheffield. It was called Just Micro and was founded by Ian Stewart and Kevin Norburn, both of whom had a background in retail but a desire to get into the games industry. Fortunately, the shop attracted local talent such as Pete Harrap, Shaun Hollingworth and Tony Crowther, and so Gremlin Graphics was formed in 1984.
This lavish 560-page book traces the company's history, from its early successes with Monty Mole, Jack the Nipper and Thing on A Spring, through its groundbreaking Lotus racing games, to its purchase by Infogrames in 1999.
A Gremlin In The Works by Mark Hardisty features interviews and anecdotes from all the key Gremlin members, including Chris Kerry, Ben Daglish and Greg Holmes, as well as well-known figures from the UK games scene: Rod Cousens, Tim Chaney, Jeremy Heath-Smith, Geoff Brown and Infogrames founder Bruno Bonnell, among many others.
Enriched with game images, memorabilia and archive material such as old letters, business cards, staff photos and game design documents, this is an exhaustive and comprehensive chronicle of one of Britain's most popular developers and a fascinating exploration of the meteoric rise of the gaming scene in the 80s and 90s.
This second edition of A Gremlin In The Work s differs from the original 2015 edition. In direct response to customer feedback, the book is now collected into one hardback edition, as opposed to two separate books, and the slipcase is not included. The contents have received some minor updates.
