The Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES (known as the Famicom in its native Japan), has played a major role in video gaming history with its cutting-edge graphics and extensive catalog of iconic games.
Nintendo's console came out and immediately set new standards with classics like Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., Mega Man, The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, and many others. In its 20 years of existence, the console sold over 60 million units, made Nintendo a household name, and introduced new worlds, characters, and stories to young people everywhere. For many, it was a turning point in their lives, leading them to become artists, game designers, and programmers. It helped popularize manga and anime among Western gamers, and brought icons of Western culture into Japanese homes. Nintendo's little 8-bit console changed the world of entertainment forever, and its influence cannot be overstated.
NES/Famicom: a visual compendium showcases the best in pixel art, box art, and product design, including Japanese Famicom graphics and those used for Western game editions. Over 170 classic games are featured in 512 pages, with articles on the leading developers, interviews with key industry figures, and mini-features on topics such as packaging, fan art, and unreleased games. Each book comes in a 3mm protective cardboard slipcase with animation-effect lenticular images.

In keeping with more recent visual compendiums, contributor entries now also include their role in the game or profession. The fold-out pages from the first edition have been removed, but the content remains, of course.
