It wasn't easy being a Nintendo fan in the early 90s: the wonderful Super Famicom was released in Europe as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, but it was hampered by a 50 Hz image with black bars and a delayed release date. Nintendo fans got a Japanese console and bought their games on the grey import market.
Not only did the Japanese Super Famicom cartridges have the advantage of faster, smoother, full-screen gameplay, but they also came in beautiful portrait-format boxes rather than the landscape-format packaging sold in Europe and North America. The stylish, intricate Japanese designs were almost always better than the Western versions.
Bitmap Books is proud to celebrate this unique work of art and presents Super Famicom: The Box Art Collection - a compilation of Japanese game boxes, professionally photographed and presented in a gorgeous hardback edition. The book contains around 250 titles, including many rare examples and some that have never been documented in print before. From the archives of renowned collector Stuart Brett (aka the Super Famicom Guy), each box is presented life-size, with a critique of the artwork and interviews with other collectors who talk about their love of the format.
Super Famicom: The Box Art Collection comes in a square book format, bound in charcoal color with a gold foil block logo, and lithographically printed to the highest standards. Long-time games journalist Steve Jarratt, launch editor of Edge and Nintendo magazine Total!, has supervised the text and also written the foreword.
Super Famicom: The Box Art Collection is a must-have treat for anyone who loved Nintendo's 16-bit gaming console and appreciated the distinctive Japanese graphics that adorn these iconic games.
