The Macintosh changed video games. It challenged the medium to be more than just a child's game and quick reflexes. It made human-computer interaction friendly, inviting and intuitive. Mac games led to much of what PC gamers enjoy today. taken for granted, and spawned some of the biggest franchises in video game history - including Myst , Halo and SimCity . It allowed anyone to develop games and game-related software with ease and gave independent developers a home for their products.

The Macintosh welcomed unusual ideas and encouraged experimentation. It fostered passionate and creative communities that inspired and challenged developers to do better and follow the Mac mantra: "Think different."

In his book The Secret History of Mac Gaming, award-winning journalist and games historian Richard Moss uses archival footage and around 80 interviews with key figures of the era to tell the story of these communities and the game developers who survived and thrived in an ecosystem largely ignored by the outside world. It's a book about people who followed their hearts first and market trends second, and showed how clever, quirky and downright wonderful video games could be.

The Secret History of Mac Gaming also includes guest chapters by Craig Fryar, Apple's first Mac games evangelist and co-developer of the hit game Spectre , as well as custom illustrations for the dividers and cover by graphic designer and pixel artist JJ Signal , all in the beautiful 1-bit aesthetic of early Macintosh games. At 480 pages, The Secret History of Mac Gaming features striking colored page borders, a Pantone-colored hardback cover, and a color-coded ribbon bookmark.
